ChatGPT on its own is a good sewing tutor but not a pattern drafter: it can explain techniques, plan a project and describe how to draft a garment, but it does not produce a tested, true-scale pattern drafted to your measurements. Ourlette does exactly that, and it also works inside ChatGPT as an app, so you can ask for a pattern in the chat and get the printable PDF. Use each for what it does well.

What happens when you ask ChatGPT for a sewing pattern?

Ask a general AI assistant for "a pattern for a wrap skirt in my size" and you will usually get a sensible answer in words: the pieces you need, how to calculate them from your waist and hip, the order of construction and some fabric suggestions. Show it a photo and it can describe the neckline, the sleeves and the fabric. It may offer to generate an image, or to write code that draws the pieces as an SVG or PDF file.

That is useful, but it is not the same thing as a pattern. A language model predicts text; it does not run a tested drafting system, so its numbers can vary from one attempt to the next and can contain mistakes that look plausible. A generated image of a pattern has no reliable scale. A file produced by code may print, but nothing has checked that the front and back side seams are the same length, that the sleeve cap fits the armhole, or that the ease suits the garment and fabric. You would need to verify every piece yourself, which takes the drafting knowledge you were hoping to skip.

At the time of writing (October 2026), this is a limit of general-purpose assistants, which are not built to run drafting calculations; specialized tools fill that gap.

What does Ourlette do differently?

Ourlette splits the job in two. The AI does what language models are good at: recognizing the garment in a photo, a screenshot, a Pinterest or Instagram link or a description, and choosing one of the 36 catalogue garment types with its options (length, neckline, sleeves, fullness, closure, pockets). For anything else, on the Maker and Atelier plans, Ourlette's AI pattern maker builds a new design piece by piece on the engine's blocks (the Free plan suggests the closest tested models and Community patterns instead); every seam is checked on three sizes and a second AI pattern maker reviews the draft. Then the drafting engine draws every piece from flat-pattern blocks with your measurements and the right ease. Same inputs, same pattern, every time, and when you change a measurement or an option the pattern redraws instantly.

You get the pieces with seam allowances included, a 3D preview on a mannequin built from your measurements, a sewing guide with the steps for your version, notions, fabric quantities and cutting layouts, and, on a paid plan, a true-scale PDF on A4, US Letter, A3, Tabloid, A0, 36 × 48 in or a projector file, with a 5 cm and 2 in test square.

What is ChatGPT good for in sewing?

Quite a lot, as long as you treat it as an advisor:

  • Explaining a term or a technique in a pattern you already own.
  • Planning a project, a capsule wardrobe or a shopping list of notions.
  • Comparing fabrics for a garment and how to handle them.
  • Troubleshooting a machine problem or a puckered seam.
  • Quick calculations you double-check, such as a hem allowance or an elastic length.

Our article on sewing with ChatGPT goes into more detail.

When is Ourlette the better choice?

Whenever you need something to cut fabric from. If you want a garment from a photo drafted to your body, a pattern you can print at home or at a copy shop, and instructions that match the pieces in front of you, a drafting tool is the right tool. Ourlette's guide also includes an AI you can question ("my fabric is slippery, any tips for this step?"), and it answers about your pattern rather than in general.

Can you use Ourlette inside ChatGPT?

Yes. Ourlette works inside ChatGPT and Claude as an app (an MCP server). In the chat, send a photo link or describe the garment with your measurements: Ourlette drafts the pattern, shows it in the conversation and gives you the link to the PDF. You keep the conversation for advice and planning, and Ourlette does the drafting. The Ourlette app for ChatGPT page explains how to set it up.

What are the limits of both?

ChatGPT on its own cannot guarantee a correct, true-scale pattern, and you are responsible for checking anything it calculates. Ourlette's tested drafting covers its 36 catalogue garment types; anything else, such as a blazer with notched lapels, a corset, lingerie or swimwear, is a new design from its AI pattern maker that has not been sewn yet, so make a toile first, and expect structured tailoring, underwired bras and boned corsetry to need adjusting by hand. Printing a Ourlette pattern needs a paid plan, from $7.99 a month or $59 a year (6 easy models print for free), and new designs need Maker (3 a month) or Atelier, while the free plan lets you make patterns from the catalogue, preview them in 3D and read the guide on screen.
